Bud Abernathy is nine years old. His brother, Temple, is five. Longing for adventure, the boys, with their parents' permission, ride from Oklahoma to New Mexico and back on horseback.Along the way they meet many people and have many adventures, including brushes with wolves, snakes, and even quicksand, and on their journey the boy’s relationship evolves as they become closer and closer to each other.
