Jim Hawkins is the young boy of the Admiral Benbow Inn owners. After regular customer, Billy Bones, has a stroke and is on bed rest, Jim is assigned take care of him. Bones is visited by an old crewmate of the notorious pirate, Captain Flint, who is asking for Bones’ sea chest. Later, Bones’ is visited by another crewmate, Pew, who gives Bones a pirates’ summons, the Black Spot, saying he has until ten o’clock, then Bones drops dead. Jim and his mother search Bones’ sea chest for the fees he owes, but pirate interfere and they must flee. All Jim received was an oilskin packet. Jim takes the oilskin to Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney so that they can inspect it. Turns out it is a logbook and detailed map of where Captain Flint has buried his looted treasure. They immediately set sail on the “Hispaniola” with a Captain Smollett and Long John Silver, a sea cook. While on board the ship, Jim overhears Silver discussing mutiny among the crew. Jim warns Livesey & Co. about the mutiny. When they reach shore it becomes even more of an adventure than what’s already taken place. —Alison Defenbach
