Jefferson (Jeff) Davis Bussey is a young man who, at 16, can finally join the Union army and fight against the soldiers of the south in the Civil War. While Jeff immediately gains the scorn of his new officer, he begins to make friends as well. After a time fighting for the Union army, Jeff, among others, becomes a spy for the North and is charged with obtaining information about their enemy, Confederate General Stand Watie. The mission does not go according to plan and Jeff becomes stranded among Watie’s men, pretending to be a Confederate soldier. During his time here he gets to know several Confederate soldiers and his opinion of these men begins to change as he realizes that they are not any different from him. During this time he also meets Lucy Washbourne, a girl who Jeff falls for, and is a rebel through and through. Eventually Jeff is able to return to his Union comrades and complete his mission. After more years of fighting Jeff is able to return home and begin his life after war, having learned many lessons and met many different people. —Matthew Hoehamer
