WHITE FANG by Jack London (1906)

Simon & Brown, 2011 edition. 208 pages. ISBN: 1936041650.

This classic tale tells the story of White Fang, a mixed wolf-dog. After White Fang’s father is killed, his mother and he are found by Native Americans and taken to live with them. As a dog with wolf blood, White Fang has a hard life in the Native American camp and learns to be self-reliant and vicious. Eventually White Fang is sold to a man who participates in dog fights and is forced to fight several different animals. Fortunately, White Fang is rescued from this life by a man named Weedon Scott. Weedon takes White Fang and tries to teach him compassion and how to act around other people. After a time Weedon takes White Fang home to California with him and they live a different sort of life there. After surviving new adventures in California, including a life-threatening fight with a criminal, White Fang seems to have found a home with Weedon and the other people and animals there. —Matthew Hoehamer
