CALL IT COURAGE by Armstrong Sperry (1940)

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 1968 edition. 95 pages. ISBN: 0027860302. Winner of the Newbery Medal, 1941.

Mafatu, the Boy Who Was Afraid, spent his whole life being made fun of because of his fears. He fears the sea the most of all because of a tragic event that occurred, when he was much younger, that resulted in his mother’s death. So, he decides one day to conquer his fears and earn the respect of his people, especially his father, by setting sail out to sea on a journey with only his dog, Uri, and an albatross named Kivi. He takes his canoe and sails out to sea only to meet with many challenges and enemies. First a storm comes crashing down from the sky and gives Mafatu difficulties at sea, not to mention the many sea creatures that have it out for his life. After the sea he faces a desert island that puts his survival skills to the test. And then he runs into a tribe of savages. It’s one fear after another that Mafatu faces. —Alison Defenbach
